Seeding Ground WE NEED A FORM OF RENEWABLE ENERGY THAT DOES NOT STARVE PEOPLE...

The Cost of Corn Ethanol
Starving the People To Feed the Cars

This seems to be one of the only forms that doesn't take food off people's plates.

Wired reports, "Biodiesel fueling stations are sprouting like weeds across America, where production of the alternative fuel rose 66 percent in 2003." The Physics Department at the University of New Hampshire has an article on "Widescale biodiesel production from algae." "With alternate fuel becoming a fairly hot trend in recent months, some academics may have applied their theoretical know-how to give us a practical solution. They offer up the idea that certain types of algae are well-suited to biodiesel production as they are nearly 50 percent oil."

Resonant Guide Update: Wikipedia Entry : POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

Positive psychology emphasizes what is right with people rather than what is wrong with them. The focus is on positive subjective experiences, cognitive constructs about the future, and the capacity for courage, aesthetic sensibility, creativity, perseverance, altruism, tolerance, and wisdom at the individual and group levels. "Every year, prestigious medical journals are filled with studies, showing a connection between your health and your outlook on life. Apparently, people with positive outlooks recover from surgery faster, have less heart disease, suffer less pain when they are ill, catch colds less frequently, and live as much as 10 years longer..."

Emerging Systems In 'Fractal Expressionism' associate professor, Richard Taylor (Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon) combines science and art stating that American painter Jackson Pollack's paintings were fractal. But it doesn't stop there... a relationship between the our visual field's complexity and our levels of stress can be reduced, if we take into account our environment and work surroundings... At their basic level, fractals are repeating patterns that reveal greater complexity the more they are enlarged. Some are geometric and easy to spot, like a snowflake or the popular example known as the Sierpinski Triangle, a triangle made of so many smaller triangles that the closer you look the more triangles you find...

Seeding Ground Wired magazine has a great article in their May 2004 issue on "gene science [that] is Earth-friendly and all-natural." So...genetic engineering our food may be not the best course of action afterall. Thank goodness! For example, savory, high-yield fruit (that) would ripen on the vine and remain firm in transit...Researchers are beginning to understand plants so precisely that they no longer need transgenics to achieve traits like drought resistance, durability, or increased nutritional value."

Resonant Guide UPDATED What is Enlightenment? magazine has a section and article in their new issue on Collective Intelligence, "discovering that wholes are far more than the sum of their parts. When individuals unite in a shared intention, something mysterious comes into being¬ówith capacities and intelligences that far transcend those of the individuals involved." It relays ideas of complexity to what Tom Atlee calls Co-Intelligence and much more, Flemming Funch, better know as Ming the Mechanic has an article about it too.

Community Thrivability This article is a mix a few info portals and weblogs but they all relate. The first is from Technology Research News, "Silicon solar cells capture only some of the spectrum of sunlight, limiting their efficiency. A mix of several metals and oxygen could lead to solar cells that capture much more sunlight. The key is misaligning the material's crystal structure by infusing it with oxygen." Editor-in-Chief Paul Hughes of the FutureHi weblog carried this story from Berkeley National Laboratory that "An unexpected discovery could yield a full spectrum solar cell."
