Creative Stimulus On April 23, students at Swarthmore College will launch a new international student organization, the International Movement for Free Culture, dedicated to what it calls a "bottom-up, participatory structure to society and culture." The new group will leverage the power of students at colleges and universities around to the world and promises to be a leading voice for copyright reform, online rights, free and open-source software, and threats to the free flow of information.

Community Thrivability UPDATED: NEW WEBSITE
---------------------------------
A friend from Norway turned us on to Marcin Jakubowski, PhD. He is the founder of The Open Source Ecology Project, a nonprofit research and education institution creating open access to sustainable, healthy, and affordable ways of living. (1) open access to practical knowledge, (2) the collaborative development of working economic models via the nonprofit sector, and (3) education, demonstration, and training aimed at integrated, ecological, regenerative social enterprise. The process by which they attain the above is called Open Source Development, a collaborative, open process which builds on past knowledge and leverages public collaboration.

Open Intellect This just in... from Creative Commons chairman Lawrence Lessig. He released his new book, Free Culture today, both online, a licensed downloadable version and in stores. The book covers the current state of copyright law and what it means to our culture and society. Give it a look, and if you like what you see, ordering online will contribute a small percentage to Creative Commons.
UPDATE: "Free Culture" popup audiobook
UPDATE2: Business 2.0 article, Giving It Away (for Fun and Profit).

Emerging Systems Physicist and computer scientist Stephen Wolfram has made his seminal work, A New Kind of Science, available for free online. What is the Principle of Computational Equivalence? Almost all processes that are not obviously simple can be viewed as computations of equivalent sophistication. More specifically, the principle of computational equivalence says that systems found in the natural world can perform computations up to a maximal ("universal") level of computational power, and that most systems do in fact attain this maximal level of computational power.

Resonant Guide SchoolForge News has a great article on..."Have you wanted to go to your school and explain why they should use more Open Source Software but not had the time to really sit down and put together a good presentation of why it should? It may have been done for you!

Open Intellect You want to help build a truly open network that values freedom of communication and doesn't treat the individual as just another pair of eyeballs. You like the idea of open-source software. Well...just found this..Open Instant Messaging, instant messages are similar to email because they consist of text that you type back and forth. However, unlike email, responces are in seconds. A shinning example is PSI - an awesome client for the Jabber network.

Creative Stimulus Here's a great article written in the NY Times The Tyranny of Copyright, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation's page on free culture.
1. Creativity and innovation always builds on the past.
2. The past always tries to control the creativity that builds on it.
3. Free societies enable the future by limiting the past.
4. Ours is less and less a free society. --Lawrence Lessig, 2002.

Resonant Guide To sow the seeds of a global self-organizing, self-propagating infrastructure which allows the creation, discovery, commitment, and fulfillment of meaningful giving opportunities within a trusted environment... Asking the question, "What is the simplest thing I can do which will have the maximum global humanitarian uplift?"

Awareness Research When people talk about wisdom, they often use sight-related words like insight, foresight, discernment, farsightedness, brilliance, reflection, illumination, enlightenment, visionary and seer. "I am writing about wisdom to recover it from esoteric realms and place it solidly in the middle of our collective lives where the world lives or dies, depending on how wise we learn how to be together."

Resonant Guide To encourage discussions of the methods and approaches we use to move into and out of the social, economic, artistic, political and technical networks we connect to and/or disconnect from. The Version>04: invisibleNetworks convergence mobilizes a diagram of these interconnections, entry and exit points and the transmissions that occur within them. Uncover and open channels of discussion, hidden orders, unseen hands, blackboxes, backdoors, wormholes and access points. Participants in Version>04: invisibleNetworks will function as nodes and hubs in this amorphous system and construct this years' decentralized convergence.
